The Jefferson Nickel, designed by Felix Schlag, was first minted in 1938. Honored on the five-cent piece for nearly 100 years, Thomas Jefferson was only the third president featured on circulation coinage. This specific Proof Jefferson Nickel was struck in 1980 at the San Francisco Mint and has been graded in near-perfect Proof 69 Deep Cameo condition. In 1981, Proof coinage struck at the San Francisco Mint featured one of two different S Mintmarks. This Type 1 example showcases a more rounded S on the obverse. Out of every Proof 1981-S Type 1 Jefferson Nickel struck, significantly less than 1% have been graded in Proof 69 DCAM condition.
