1964-D Kennedy Half Dollar NGC MS63 First Day of Issue

In 2020, over 56 years after the Kennedy Half Dollars official release, Rare Collectibles TV acquired a government sealed canvas bag with “American Trust Company” stamped on its face. Stapled to the bag was a tag indicating “Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco” and “Kennedy Halves, Mar 19, 1964.” With the Kennedy Half Dollar released to the public on March 24, 1964, it was apparent that the coins in this bag were among the first Kennedy Half Dollars ever struck. After being submitted to NGC, the sealed bag and the Kennedy Half Dollars inside of it were authenticated. Shortly after, the 1964-D Kennedy Half Dollars were graded, and for the first time ever, designated as First Day of Issue.

A historic numismatic discovery like this is almost certainly never going to occur again. This First Day of Issue 1964-D Kennedy Half Dollar has been certified in Mint State 63 condition by NGC. With only 448 examples graded in MS63 condition with FDOI certification, this 1964-D Kennedy Half Dollar is a tremendous Condition Rarity.
