1929-P Indian Head Gold Half Eagle MS63

Description

The 1929 Indian Head Gold Half Eagle is the final year that this coin was struck. Without a doubt, the 1929 issue is the key date of the entire series. Struck in the same year as the Great Stock Market Crash of 1929 and just before the gold recall of 1933, nearly all examples of this coin have been melted down. Between both PCGS and NGC, there have only been 153 graded in Mint State 63 condition. That is 0.02% of the entire mintage. With so few examples left over, this coin is a perfect example of what conditional rarity truly means.

Designed by Bela Lyon Pratt, the Indian Head Gold Half Eagle was struck from 1908 to 1916 and for one last year in 1929. This coin design is particularly interesting due to its incuse, or sunken relief design, which is imprinted into the coin. Out of all coins in U.S. history, the Indian Head Half Eagle and Quarter Eagle are the only ones with a sunken relief design.
