1926-P Sesquicentennial Gold Commemorative $2.5 Quarter Eagle MS65

Description

The Sesquicentennial Gold Quarter Eagle, designed by John R. Sinnock, was minted in 1926 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of American independence. The obverse of this coin depicts a full body rendition of Lady Liberty standing atop a globe and holding the Declaration of Independence in her hand. Surrounding Lady Liberty are the dates 1776 to commemorate the year the Declaration of Independence was signed and 1926 to celebrate the 150th year of American independence. The reverse of this coin showcases a beautiful engraving of Independence Hall, the building in which the Declaration of Independence was signed. Initially, 200,000 of these coins were struck, but shortly after, a majority of the coins were melted down by the U.S. Mint. After the mass melt of these iconic coins took place, only a minuscule 46,019 examples had survived, making this stunning gold coin a tremendous Absolute Rarity.
