1873-P Open 3 Double Die Obverse Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle PCGS MS62

Description

The Twenty Dollar Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle, designed by James B. Longacre, was minted from 1850 to 1907. This example was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1873 and is graded Mint State 62. This 1873-P Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle is of the Type 2 variety, which was only minted for 10 years and is notorious for being extremely difficult to find in high grades. This example also showcases a Double Die strike on the obverse, which happens when the die or hub are misaligned during the mintage process. Out of all 1873-P Liberty Head Double Eagles struck with Open 3 and Double Die Obverse, only 169 examples are graded MS62 making this coin a tremendous Condition Rarity.

Coins like this 1873-P Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle became increasingly rarer as a result of President Franklin D. Roosevelt signing Executive Order 6102 in 1933. This order sought to revive the American economy by recalling circulating American gold coins to be melted down.
