1855-P Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle AU50

The Twenty Dollar Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle, designed by James B. Longacre, was minted from 1850 to 1907. This example was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1855 and is graded Almost Uncirculated 50. This 1855-P Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle is of the Type 1 variety, which was only minted for 16 years and is notorious for being extremely difficult to find in high grades. With a low mintage of just 364,666 coins, finding one of these coins in any condition is difficult to do. Out of all 1855-P Liberty Head Double Eagles struck, only 100 have been graded in AU50 condition making this example a tremendous Absolute and Condition Rarity.

Coins like this 1855-P Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle became increasingly rarer as a result of President Franklin D. Roosevelt signing Executive Order 6102 in 1933. This order sought to revive the American economy by recalling circulating American gold coins to be melted down.
