1853 Liberty Head $20 Gold Double Eagle AU 58

Description

The Twenty Dollar Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle, designed by James B. Longacre, was minted from 1850 to 1907. This example was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1853 and is graded in About Uncirculated 58 condition. This 1853-P Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle is of the Type 1 variety, which was only minted for 16 years and is notorious for being extremely difficult to find in high grades. Out of all 1853-P Liberty Head Double Eagles struck, only 488 examples have been graded in AU58 condition with just 159 graded in Mint State condition. With such a low AU58 population and even fewer graded higher, this 1853-P example is a tremendous Condition Rarity.

Coins like this 1853-P Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle became increasingly rarer as a result of President Franklin D. Roosevelt signing Executive Order 6102 in 1933. This order sought to revive the American economy by recalling circulating American gold coins to be melted down.
