1837 Hard Times Token HT-33 Illustrious Predecessor PCGS MS63BN

Description

Hard-times tokens are unofficial coins that were struck in the 1830s and acted as political satire. This 1837 example is most commonly known as the “Illustrious Predecessor” because of the inscription on the reverse. The full inscription reads “I FOLLOW IN THE STEPS OF MY ILLUSTRIOUS PREDECESSOR,” which was a quote from President Martin Van Buren’s inaugural address in 1837. The obverse depicts a turtle carrying the treasury with the inscription “EXECUTIVE EXPERIMENT,” which is a potential jab at the Bank of the United States being deemed unconstitutional. With only 234 graded between PCGS and NGC, and just 35 graded in Mint State 63 BN condition, this token is both an Absolute and Condition rarity.
