The 1792 Half Disme, thought to be designed by early colonial engraver Robert Birch, was specially minted in 1792 as the first official coin produced by the United States. Known today as a half dime, the term disme comes from the French word for ‘tenth’ and is engraved on the reverse of this example. Only 1,500 examples were struck at John Harper’s factory in Philadelphia, while the U.S. Mint was being built. Between NGC and PCGS, only 134 examples have been graded. This specific 1792 Half Disme is one of 11 examples graded in Very Fine condition. As the first official coin produced by the United States, not only is this 1792 Half Disme an incredible Absolute and Condition rarity, but it is also a crucial piece of United States of America’s history.
