1776 Machin’s Mill “GEORGIVS” Half Pence NGC F 12 BN

Description

This Machin’s Mill Half Pence is dated 1776, the same year that the United States declared independence from British tyranny, making it a truly remarkable specimen of American history. During Colonial times in the United States, there was no centralized Mint or monetary system. Instead, it was up to the government of the individual colonies to produce coinage for the colonists of early America. Among the most prolific Mints to exist at this time was Machin’s Mill of New York. Although this coin is dated 1776, Machin’s Mill was not in operation until about 1787. Interestingly enough, the Machin’s Mill only struck a few official state coins, with a vast majority of its production output dedicated to striking counterfeit British Half Pence examples like this. With only 2 examples of this 1776 Machin’s Mill “GEORGIVS” Half Pence graded in Fine condition by NGC, and only 57 examples graded by NGC and PCGS in total, this example is a tremendous piece of American Colonial history.
